An excerpt from Wind in the Willows

Nice? It's the ONLY thing, said the Water Rat solemnly, as he leant forward for his stroke. Believe me, my young friend, there is NOTHING - absolute nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing, he went on dreamily: messing - about - in - boats; messing----'

First 'official' newsletter about QDJ Pageant

I have received the first (I assume of a number) of newsletters about the build up to the event on 3-June-12.

It puts some reality into what we have said we will do following the kind invitation to attend.  It's all quite exciting now.  As you would imagine things are changing a little from the original thoughts but nothing yet cast in stone but some of the changes proposed are encouraging and will make things a lot easier I think.

House on the market

The living room with the fire roaring
I have made a decision to put the house on the market with a local estate agent but have no idea where I'll go if it sells.  I am really becoming quite concerned about the proposed developments in my village (Brookwood) which in my humble opinion will ruin it.  There's Brookwood Farm (the local Council's response to pressure from central Government) and there's also the development of the old Deepcut Army barracks which I think will also impact on Brookwood - being at the bottom of the Deepcut flight of locks and the only 'local' railway station.

There's going to be a huge impact on infrastructure in my view so I thought seeing the house was tidy, the loft sorted (after 25 years!) and that spring was approaching it might be a good idea to test the market.  If the house sells I'll probably put my furniture into storage and live on the boat for the summer and then come back into the market as a 'first time' buyer although I must say that this bungalow on the edge of Bottomley Lock (33) on the Rochdale and close to friends in Mytholmroyd takes my fancy somewhat.

Guildford Festival Boat Gathering cancelled

I heard yesterday that the National Trust has been obliged to cancel the 2012 Guildford Festival Boat Gathering due to the number of boats having booked to attend and the current water levels coupled with the predictions of rainfall for the coming months.  Let's hope the predictions are incorrect but it is sad that the NT feel there is a need to cancel.

Boat in the cold

Went down to check the boat today after the extreme cold in my part of the world. Apart from some water left in the sink (which was frozen) everything else was fine and Leo No 2 seems to have survived the cold in very good order.  For the first time ever I saw ice adjacent to where the boat is moored in Addlestone.

European 112 day

Today being 112 (11th February) is European 112 day.  112 is the new European wide emergency number . It is much better to use 112 rather than 999 when on a boat (assuming you need to call the emergency services) as it will give the responder an idea as to where you are which 999 doesn't do.  Please see this link.

CaRT: Boater's Representatives

One wonders why there are 5 (arguably 6) people who have put themselves forward for the four positions as boater's representatives who are very closely allied to the IWA - that's greater than 10% of the total number of people who have put their names forward.

IMHO I think we need a 'broad church' approach and have views from all sides rather than all the boaters representatives being from one organisation.

I find the whole process very odd and questionable.

As much as I support the IWA I do hope the boater's representatives are what the job title says - representative.
